About Ol Doinyo Lengai

The Maasai call it the Mountain of God. Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcano rising straight from the floor of the Rift Valley above Lake Natron, and its unusual lava erupts almost black before turning white.

It's not high, but it's one of the toughest climbs in Tanzania: very steep and loose underfoot, in great heat. So you climb at midnight, reaching the top for sunrise. Our crew checks current volcanic activity before every climb.
